What hidden clock measures
Press start and a millisecond clock begins. For the first second you can see it, which shows you the pace. Then it hides. Your job is to stop it at exactly ten seconds using nothing but your internal sense of time. Three attempts make one run, and your score is the average error in milliseconds.
This is a measure of interval timing, which is one of the more studied things about human perception. Ten seconds is a useful length: long enough that you cannot simply react, short enough that most people do not resort to counting aloud. Typical error is around five to eight percent of the interval, which is five to eight hundred milliseconds. Under two hundred is unusually good.
The error is not random. Most people stop early when they are tense or paying attention and late when they are relaxed or distracted, because attention makes time feel like it is passing faster. Watching which way you miss across the three attempts tells you more than the average does.

How to hit the mark
- Use the visible second. That first second is not decoration. It shows you exactly how fast the clock runs, and locking onto that rhythm before it hides is worth more than anything you do afterward.
- Count in a steady rhythm, not in your head. Silent counting speeds up under pressure. Tapping a finger or nodding on each beat keeps the rhythm honest, and ten taps at one per second is a good stop.
- Note which way you miss. Early or late is the useful signal. If two attempts are early by three hundred, the third should be deliberately held. Correcting a consistent bias is most of the improvement available.
- Do not look at anything that moves. Cursors, animations and other tabs all feed your sense of time. A still screen and a still hand give the cleanest estimate.
- Breathe out before you stop. Holding your breath compresses time. Most people stop early while tense and closer to the mark when relaxed.
