What this test measures

This is a digit span task, one of the oldest measures in cognitive psychology and still a component of standard IQ batteries. A number appears for a few seconds, disappears, and you type it back exactly. Each correct answer adds one digit. Your score is the longest number you reproduced without error.

Clinical digit span for adults averages around seven forwards, but browser versions consistently produce higher numbers because the display time scales with length, there is no examiner pacing you, and most people rehearse the digits aloud. Nine is a reasonable expectation here, and scores in the mid-teens are almost always the result of grouping digits into pairs or triples.

How to improve your score

  • Group the digits into twos or threes. Nobody holds fourteen separate digits. They hold five chunks of two or three, which is well within normal span. Grouping is the whole game here.
  • Say the number out loud as it appears. The phonological loop rehearses sound better than sight. Speaking the digits creates an auditory trace that survives the gap far better than a purely visual one.
  • Attach meaning to the chunks. A pair that happens to be a year, an age, or a familiar number is stored almost for free. Competitive memorisers do a systematic version of this, but the informal version works too.
  • Rehearse continuously during the blank moment. The gap between the number disappearing and your typing is where scores are lost. Keep the digits cycling in your head rather than pausing.
  • Type immediately and do not second-guess. The trace decays in seconds. Hesitating over whether the third digit was a 4 or a 7 usually costs you the digits after it as well.

What is the average number memory score?

Around 9 digits on a test of this format. Clinical digit span averages closer to 7, but the lower figure comes from a stricter procedure with fixed presentation timing.

Is 7 digits normal?

Yes. Seven is the classic short-term memory span and is entirely normal. It is also, not coincidentally, the length of a local phone number in many countries.

How do people reach 15 or more digits?

By chunking. Fifteen digits stored as five groups of three is five items, which fits comfortably in working memory. Nobody stores fifteen independent digits.

Does a low score mean my memory is bad?

No. This measures short-term verbal span under time pressure, which is a narrow capacity distinct from long-term memory, recognition memory, and everything else people usually mean by memory. A low score on a browser test is not diagnostic of anything.

Why does the number stay on screen longer as it gets longer?

So that encoding time scales with the amount of material. A fixed display time would turn the test into a reading speed measurement once the numbers got long.
