Firewall Dodge

Seven lanes. Every wave fills six of them and leaves one open. Move with A and D, the arrow keys, or by tapping either side, and stay alive for twenty seconds.

How the firewall minigame works

You are a block at the bottom of a seven-lane field. Rows of packets fall from the top, and every row is solid except for one lane. Your job is to be in that lane when the row reaches you. Rows are spaced so the next one is already in view before the last has passed you, and they fall faster as the run goes on — by the last few seconds the field is moving more than twice as fast as it was at the start.

The score is seconds survived. Twenty seconds is a clear. Touch a packet and the run ends where it ended, so a run that dies at fourteen seconds scores fourteen. There are no lives and no second chances within a run; the pressure is the point.

The open lane is never more than three lanes from the last open lane, which keeps every wave reachable. It is still a reading problem: you have to see where the gap is before the row is on you, and the faster the field moves, the earlier you have to look.

Most first runs end between four and eight seconds, right where the speed ramp starts to bite. Clearing the full twenty is a matter of reading two rows ahead rather than reacting to the one in front of you.

How to survive longer

  • Look at the top of the field, not the bottom. The row that will kill you is the one just spawning, not the one about to reach you. If you are reacting to the nearest row, you are already late by the twelve-second mark.
  • Move the moment you see the gap. Moving is instant, so there is no reason to wait. Get into the lane early and stay still until the next gap appears.
  • Stay near the centre when you can. The gap never jumps more than three lanes, so from the middle every gap is reachable in three moves or fewer. From an edge, some are six moves away.
  • Read the row behind the row. There are always two rows in view. Your eyes belong on the upper one; the lower one is already decided.
  • Expect the ramp. The field is more than twice as fast at twenty seconds as at zero. A pace that felt easy at five seconds is not enough at fifteen.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the NoPixel 5.0 firewall minigame?

It is an independent recreation built from descriptions of how the 5.0 firewall run plays: seven lanes, one open per wave, twenty seconds to survive. It is not connected to any server and is not affiliated with Rockstar Games or NoPixel.

What are the controls?

A and D, or the left and right arrow keys, move one lane per press. On a touchscreen, tap the left or right half of the field. Movement is instant.

Can the open lane be unreachable?

No. Each wave's open lane is within three lanes of the previous one, so every gap can be reached in time. Runs end because the gap was seen too late, not because it could not be reached.

What is the score if I clear it?

Twenty seconds, which is the top of the scale. The result also shows how many waves you dodged. Clearing puts you in the top few percent of runs.

Does the speed change?

Yes. The fall speed ramps continuously over the twenty seconds, and rows keep a fixed spacing so a faster field also means less time between them. The last five seconds are the hard part of every run.
