How Memory Match works
Cards sit face down in pairs. You turn two over; if they match they stay up, and if they do not they flip back. The score is how many moves you needed, so the game is not about speed but about how much of what you have already seen you can still remember when it becomes useful.
The interesting part is that a non-matching pair is not a wasted move. It gives you two pieces of location information, and a player who uses that information perfectly needs far fewer moves than one who flips at random. On a twelve card board, random play averages around 40 moves while perfect recall finishes in 12.

How to use fewer moves
- Turn the same unknown card first every time. Pick your unknown deliberately and always reveal it before the second card. That way each move adds exactly one new piece of information rather than two you may not retain.
- Say the position out loud. Adding a verbal label to a spatial memory gives you a second trace of it. Naming positions is the single cheapest improvement available on this game and usually saves several moves.
- Work in quadrants on the large grid. Thirty cards is beyond most people's spatial span. Splitting the board into four regions and clearing them roughly in sequence converts one impossible memory task into four manageable ones.
- Clear known pairs before exploring. If you already know where two matching cards sit, take them. Leaving them on the board means more cards to hold in memory on every subsequent turn.
- Slow down on the first few flips. The opening moves are where the information you will use later gets created. Rushing them means flipping the same cards again in five turns, which is where most wasted moves come from.

What is a good score in Memory Match?
On the 4 by 3 grid, anything under 15 moves is solid and 12 is very good. On 4 by 4, under 22 is good. On 6 by 5, under 45 is a strong result.
What is the minimum number of moves possible?
Exactly the number of pairs, if you somehow knew every position in advance. Six on the small grid, eight on medium, fifteen on large. In practice nobody reaches this without luck, because the first few flips are necessarily blind.
Does this improve your memory?
It trains recognition and spatial recall for this specific task, and you will get better at it quickly. Evidence that improvement transfers to memory in general is weak, so treat it as a game rather than as training.
Why symbols instead of pictures?
Abstract geometric shapes in the site palette keep the board visually consistent and avoid giving one card an unfair advantage by being more memorable than the others. Pictures would make some pairs much easier than others.
Is the score based on time or moves?
Moves. Time is shown for interest, but the saved best score is your lowest move count for each grid size, since the game rewards recall rather than speed.
