NoPixel Key Matrix

A 5×5 grid of five symbols with twelve cells left blank. Cycle each blank until every row and every column holds each symbol exactly once. Repeats light up red. Fifty seconds.

How the Key Matrix hack works

Key Matrix is one of the newest NoPixel 5.0 hacks, and it is a logic puzzle against the clock. The terminal shows a 5×5 grid built from five symbols: a diamond, a triangle, a circle, a square and a star. Thirteen cells are fixed clues. The other twelve are blank.

Each blank cycles through empty and the five symbols every time you click it, or press Space on it. The rule is the same as a small sudoku without the boxes: every row and every column must contain each symbol exactly once. Any symbol that repeats in a row or column lights up red as a conflict. Fill all twelve blanks with no conflicts and the matrix unlocks.

You have fifty seconds. Your score is the time it takes to solve. A run that times out is scored as 80 seconds.

What counts as a fast Key Matrix

Most of the time goes on clicking, not thinking. Each blank needs up to five clicks to reach the right symbol, so a run with no wasted clicks still takes around fifteen seconds. Knowing the answer before you start clicking is what separates a fast run from an average one.

How to get better at Key Matrix

  • Start with the fullest line. A row or column with only one blank has exactly one missing symbol. Fill those first; each one makes its crossing lines easier.
  • Count clicks, not symbols. The cycle always runs diamond, triangle, circle, square, star. If the cell needs a square, that is four clicks from empty. Click the number you need in one go instead of watching each step.
  • Use the red. A conflict tells you exactly which two cells clash. Fix it right away instead of carrying it to the end.
  • Keep your hand on the keyboard. Arrow keys or WASD jump between blanks and Space cycles, which is faster than moving the mouse across the grid.
  • Any correct grid counts. Some puzzles can be finished more than one way. If every row and column is complete with no red, you are done.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the NoPixel 5.0 Key Matrix hack?

It is an independent recreation built from how the Key Matrix hack plays: a 5x5 grid of five symbols, twelve blank cells that you cycle through the symbols, conflicts shown as you go, and a fifty second TTL. It is not connected to any server, and Benchmento is not affiliated with Rockstar Games or NoPixel.

How do I change a symbol?

Click or tap a blank cell to cycle it through empty, diamond, triangle, circle, square and star. On a keyboard you can move between blanks with the arrow keys or WASD and press Space to cycle the selected one.

What counts as a conflict?

Any symbol that appears twice in the same row or the same column. Both copies light up red until you change one of them. The matrix is solved the moment every blank is filled and nothing is red.

How long do I have?

Fifty seconds. A run that times out is scored as 80 seconds, so a slow solve always beats a fail.

Is it the same as sudoku?

It is the same idea as a small sudoku without the boxes, called a Latin square: five symbols, each once per row and once per column. Some puzzles can be finished more than one way, and any correct finish counts.
