What this test measures
This counts how many times you can press the spacebar within a fixed window. The clock starts on your first press rather than on page load, so reading this costs you nothing, and it stops the moment your chosen duration elapses. You get your average rate, your total, and your peak rate over any single second of the run.
Spacebar speed and mouse click speed measure closely related things but not identical ones. A keyboard switch has more travel than a mouse switch and the thumb is a slower digit than the index finger, so most people score slightly lower here than on a click speed test. The gap is usually half a press per second or less.
Average scores
| Tier | Presses per second | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| Casual | under 5 | below most people |
| Average | 5 – 7 | the median band |
| Good | 7 – 9 | top third |
| Fast | 9 – 11 | top 10% |
| Very fast | 11+ | specialised technique |
| Duration | Typical | Good |
|---|---|---|
| 5 seconds | 6 – 7.5 | 9+ |
| 10 seconds | 6 – 7 | 8.5+ |
| 30 seconds | 5 – 6 | 7.5+ |
| 60 seconds | 4.5 – 5.5 | 7+ |
How to press faster
- Use the side of your thumb, not the pad. The pad of the thumb has more soft tissue to compress on every press, which absorbs travel and slows the return. The harder edge gives a cleaner, faster bounce off the key.
- Rest both thumbs on the bar and alternate. Alternating thumbs is the spacebar equivalent of butterfly clicking and roughly doubles the rate a single digit can sustain. It takes practice to keep the rhythm even.
- Press near the end of the bar, not the centre. Most stabilised spacebars actuate with less travel toward the ends. The difference is small per press but compounds over hundreds of them.
- Keep your wrist off the desk. An anchored wrist forces the thumb to do all the movement alone. Letting the hand float lets a small amount of wrist motion contribute, which is less tiring over the longer runs.
- Train the duration you care about. Five second bursts and sixty second endurance runs are different motor patterns. Practising one does very little for the other.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good spacebar speed?
Between 5 and 7 presses per second is average on a short test. Above 8 is good, and anything over 10 usually means you are alternating thumbs rather than using one.
Is spacebar speed the same as click speed?
Closely related but not identical. Keyboard switches have more travel than mouse switches and the thumb is slower than the index finger, so most people score a little lower here than on a click speed test.
Why does my rate drop on the 60 second test?
Because sustained rate and burst rate are different capacities. Muscle fatigue in the thumb sets in within about fifteen seconds, and nearly everyone finishes a long run slower than they started it.
Does my keyboard matter?
Yes. Switch travel and actuation force both affect how quickly a key can be pressed and released. A low-travel keyboard will read faster than a heavy mechanical one, which is why comparing across setups is only loosely meaningful.
Can I take this test on a phone?
Yes. Tap the pad instead of pressing a key. Mobile scores are not comparable to keyboard scores, so treat them as a separate benchmark.
