What this test measures

Reaction time is the gap between a signal arriving at your eyes and your hand finishing a movement in response. This test measures simple visual reaction time: one stimulus, one response, no decision in between. The panel sits red, turns green at an unpredictable point between 1.5 and 5 seconds, and the clock runs from the instant the colour changes until your click registers.

The number you get is not purely neural. Roughly 80 to 120 milliseconds of it is your brain, and the rest is signal transmission down the arm, the mechanical travel of the mouse switch, and your display's refresh cycle. A 60 Hz monitor alone can add up to 16 milliseconds of variance, which is why the test runs five attempts and reports the average rather than letting one lucky click define your score.

How to improve your score

  • Use a wired mouse on a high refresh rate screen. Bluetooth adds polling latency and a 60 Hz panel adds display latency. Neither changes your biology but both change your number, often by 20 to 30 milliseconds combined.
  • Rest your finger on the button, not above it. Travel distance is time. A finger already touching the switch removes the downward movement from the measurement entirely.
  • Look at the centre of the panel, not the edges. Central vision resolves change faster than peripheral vision. Fixing your gaze on one point rather than scanning the area is worth a few milliseconds.
  • Test when you are alert and hydrated. Reaction time is one of the first things degraded by sleep debt. A tired result can be 40 milliseconds slower than the same person rested.
  • Do not try to predict the green. Anticipation produces occasional very low scores and frequent early clicks. The average of an honest run is a more useful number than a guessed one.

What is a good reaction time?

Anything under 250 milliseconds is above average for an adult. The median sits close to 273 milliseconds. Under 200 milliseconds is genuinely fast and usually indicates either a lot of gaming practice or very low latency equipment.

Is 300ms slow?

It is slightly below the adult median but well within normal. A 300 millisecond average is common among people testing on a laptop trackpad, on a 60 Hz screen, or late in the day. Retest on a wired mouse before drawing conclusions.

What is the average human reaction time?

For a simple visual click test, most adults land between 250 and 300 milliseconds. Auditory reaction time is faster, around 160 to 190 milliseconds, because sound reaches the brain through a shorter processing path.

Why do my attempts vary so much?

Attention fluctuates on a timescale of seconds, so some variation is normal. A spread of 40 to 60 milliseconds across five attempts is typical. A much wider spread usually means you are anticipating the green rather than reacting to it.

Can I improve my reaction time?

Somewhat. Training produces real gains of 10 to 30 milliseconds, mostly by improving attention and reducing the movement component rather than by speeding up nerve conduction. Beyond that, sleep and equipment matter more than practice.

Does age affect reaction time?

Yes. Reaction time improves through childhood, peaks in the early twenties, and declines slowly afterwards, typically by around 5 to 10 milliseconds per decade after 30.
