5 Second Spacebar Test

Five seconds is short enough that fatigue never enters the picture.

What this test measures

Five seconds is short enough that fatigue never enters the picture. What you get is close to your peak motor rate: how fast your thumb can cycle when nothing is limiting it except the switch and the muscle.

Because it is so short, this mode has the highest variance of the four. A single mistimed press costs a measurable fraction of the total, so run it three or four times and take the best rather than reading much into any one attempt.

Expect 6 to 7.5 presses per second here, noticeably above what the same person manages over sixty seconds. Anything above 9 on a five second run is genuinely fast.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good 5 second spacebar score?

Typical is 6 – 7.5 presses per second over 5 seconds, and 9+ is a good result. Those numbers apply to this duration only.

How many presses is that in 5 seconds?

At the typical rate, roughly 30 to 37 presses across the full run.

Should I alternate thumbs on a 5 second run?

Over a short burst a single thumb is usually enough, and alternating costs more in rhythm than it gains in speed.
